The Man With One Name

People who go by a single name tend to be legends in their field – Pele, Madonna, Prince, Sting, Moliere, Twiggy, Lenin, Caravaggio the list goes on.

In the UK we have the incredible fashion photographer Rankin. But the guy I want to talk about today is known by many as The Strobist, real name David Hobby.

A former photojournalist, David started a blog called Strobist back in 2006. In 2010 it was voted one of the 25 best blogs of the year. In 2009 David himself was voted one of the top 5 photographers on the internet.

The Strobist blog is the place to go to learn about lighting techniques, right from the basics. In fact there’s so much good information on there that they couldn’t fit it all into a Lighting 101, they had to expand to Lighting 102.

As the tag line at the top of their first page says;

You’ve just landed at the world’s most popular resource for photographers who want how to learn to use their flashes like a pro.

In my earlier post I linked to a video of David shooting flash with a Buzz Lightyear kids camera and still getting fantastic results. If you haven’t seen it, go check it out. A sense of humour and fun is something that always comes across whenever I see or hear him speaking.

Here are a couple of links to the X-Photographer’s YouTube Channel (David is a proponent of the Fuji-X cameras)

He is also on Flickr.

So your mission for today is to spend half an hour looking through the excellent stuff on Strobist and hopefully it will inspire you to try your hand at flash photography.
