Nom nom nom

I have signed up for a free 30-day intensive course in food photography!

Beans and Egg

Can’t remember where I saw this advertised, but anyway the course started yesterday. Neel who runs the course puts it on several times per year and you can find out more by clicking the link on the left, but I’m going to be reporting back regularly on how things are progressing.

The course runs as a lesson per day with daily assignments taking between 30 mins and 1 hour to complete. Before the course began we were asked to look up five food photographers and study their work.

I wasn’t very familiar with professional food photographers so I did a Google search and came up with the following list which you might want to check out for yourself;

David Munns

Clare Barboza

Pornchai Mittongtare

We were also asked to critique our most recent food photos and note down things we’d like to improve, so here goes;

Flavour

  • Not all jars in focus (shallow DoF)
  • Tops cut off
  • Distracting line at the bottom
  • “So What?”

Brekkie

  • Not enough colour saturation
  • Distracting background (large DoF)
  • Plate and cup cut off at edges
  • Crease in table cloth
  • Grainy

Cheers

  • Background needs more work to make even or consistent
  • Could do with greater DoF to get glasses and bottle in focus
  • Glass cuts off edge of label with brand name
  • Line of light reflection in the middle of the bottle

Clearly I’ve got a lot to learn!
